Color palette magic with flowers!
A Seasoned Florist’s Confession…
Would you believe I used to be terrified of color?
Yes, it’s true! There was a time when I was timid and self-conscious about all things related to color, especially the bright, attention-robbing, audacious colors.
Then I began to experiment with different color palettes as my confidence and skill as a designer gradually improved and color no longer terrifies me. I have learned to use certain hues to either tone down or enliven particular shades and it’s like magic to witness.
BUT, wait! I still have issues. 🫣 Orange Marigolds. We have a history, Marigolds and I, and it’s not exactly positive. The very particular bright, orange shade of these flowers have never been beautiful to me, as far back as childhood. “Too brash, too garish!”, my mind’s eye has always accused. They have long been my mom’s favorite and I could never understand why.
So, this week I was faced with a big challenge: our bride adores Orange Marigolds. 🧡 Well, of course, I agree to design a beautiful wedding bouquet using what she loves, but I also feel a slight sense of panic.
Then I remember the alchemy of color that I have discovered by working outside of my comfort zone. So this was the solution: I used the soft, warm peach and blush hues of other blooms and the audacious orange Marigolds have been gently tamed. I am in love with the results and the bride was over the moon!
Today I was so sweetly reminded that color is still, after all these years, my teacher, my mentor, my muse. With trust and intuition, true alchemy is the result.
And the best part? The once shunned Marigold has a new place in my heart and THAT is truly magical. ✨
